A longer life solution

The use of bio-based transformer fluid also addresses the performance issues of overloaded and aging transformers. Testing proves that when the mineral oil in an older transformer is replaced with bio-based transformer fluid, not only is the transformer’s life extended, but the overload capability of the transformer is increased as well.

When used in new transformers, bio-based fluid can easily add decades to the life of the transformer—in some cases doubling its lifespan—making its purchase a prudent use of rate-payers’ money. By deferring the need for replacement, the longer lifespan also delays the amount of carbon emitted from building and installing a new transformer.

As the graphic demonstrates, with the use of soy-based fluid, an estimated 1800 tons of CO2 can be mitigated per $1 million in transformer spend.
